Join the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Planetary Missions Program in a live-streamed celebration of International Observe the Moon Night Saturday, Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. INTUITIVE® Planetarium Director David Weigel will lead the interactive, live program that will include interviews with NASA planetary scientists. More than 30,000 people around the world have already signed up to participate in the live stream, which will be available on the Rocket Center’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

For this year’s Observe the Moon Night event, Weigel will use images from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to take viewers on a virtual trip to the moon. Highlights will include areas on the moon visible to the casual observer and those on the far side of the moon that we’ve seen only with the help of robotic exploration.

The goal of the event is to remind people to stop and look up at the moon, the Earth’s only natural satellite. “It’s a reminder that we are part of something much bigger,” Weigel said. “The moon provides us a deeper understanding of our mutual geological history and is our stepping stone for our future endeavors in space, a means of continuing our human exploration of space.”

Participation in the Observe the Moon Night event is free. In addition to getting the tools to identify keys features on the surface of the moon, viewers will be able to ask questions during the event.
